In this number we will reveal some of the less common measuring instruments.

1. Coordiscope

Measuring system to detect displacements of high-erected general structures such as:

  • Dams
  • Skyscrapers
  • Tunnels
  • Retaining walls
  • Power plants
  • Landslides

The system contains 2D microscope’s visualization of a pendulum wire (or inverted pendulum wire) attached to the structure. Monitoring possible displacement, it is critical for preventing and minimizing effects of catastrophic events: landslides, earthquakes, dam ruptures, underground explosions, etc. (Source: www.huggenberger.com/products/pendulum-measuring-system/)

2. Tonometer

Tonometer is a handheld applanation instrument designed to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) efficiently and accurately.

Tonometer is crucial for diagnosing and managing glaucoma and other ocular conditions.

Reichert Tono-Pen AVIA Tonometer is utilizing micro strain gage technology and a 1.0 mm diameter transducer tip, providing objective IOP measurements. The device averages 10 independent readings and includes a statistical confidence indicator to ensure accuracy.

Measurement Range: 5 to 55 mmHg

Eliminates the need for daily calibration, simplifying the measurement process. A calibration interval according to the organization’s quality assurance protocol is recommended. (Source: www.reichert.com/products/tono-pen-avia)

3. Laser Scan Micrometer

A Laser scan micrometer is a noncontact precision measurement instrument utilizing laser scanning technology to determine the dimensions of various objects with high accuracy.

The device emits a laser beam that scans across the target object. As the laser passes over the object, it detects interruptions in the beam, allowing the system to calculate the object’s dimensions based on the timing and position of these interruptions.

Laser scan micrometer provides accuracy with linearity of ±3 µm over the entire measurement range and repeatability of ±0.36 µm.

Laser scan micrometers provide advantages in speed, noncontact measurement, and the ability to handle delicate or moving objects, for specialized applications in various industries. (Source: www.mitutoyo.com/webfoo/wp-content/uploads/LSM-6902H_2267.pdf)

BIPM is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the signing of the Metre convention, May 20-22, 2025, Paris and Versailles.

The French name for the International Bureau of Weights and Measures is Bureau International des Poids et Mesures. BIPM was established by the 1875 Metre Convention
