Standards Update

Sustainability and Technology are Shaping the Next ISO 9001 Update

ISO 9001 is leading changes in quality. Sustainability has changed from a suggestion to a requirement, and upcoming revisions will align the standard with the latest in Industry 4.0, including AI and IoT technologies.

Quality management is changing, and fast. Sustainability considerations have shifted from optional to mandatory. AI governance is front and center. And the scope of quality now encompasses environmental responsibility, customer satisfaction, and responsible technology use.

Upcoming ISO 9001 Changes

2026 marks the next big shift with an ISO 9001 revision. This update will tackle Industry 4.0 head-on, providing guidance on integrating AI and other technologies into quality management systems.

By 2028, expect a major overhaul of ISO 14001 for environmental management. This revision will likely align even more closely with ISO 9001, further cementing sustainability as a core business practice.

How to Prepare

To plan for the 2026 ISO 9001 update focusing on Industry 4.0, quality managers should take these practical steps:

  1. Audit your current technology:
    • List all software used in quality management (e.g., QMS software, data analytics tools)
    • Identify where you’re using automation in your processes
    • Assess the age and capabilities of your quality control equipment
  2. Evaluate data practices:
    • Review how you collect and store quality data
    • Check if your data is easily accessible for analysis
    • Determine if you’re using real-time data in decision-making
  3. Start small-scale AI projects:
    • Try using machine learning for defect detection in a single product line
    • Implement predictive maintenance on one critical piece of equipment
    • Use AI to analyze customer feedback for quality insights
  4. Explore IoT applications:
    • Install sensors on key equipment to monitor performance
    • Test remote quality monitoring on a pilot production line
    • Implement real-time tracking for a sample of products
  5. Upskill your team:
    • Provide basic coding and data analysis training to quality staff
    • Offer courses on AI and machine learning fundamentals
    • Train managers on digital transformation principles

These steps will help you understand your current capabilities and identify areas for improvement before the new standards take effect.

ISO 9001: A Roundup of Practical Insights

Want to dig deeper into ISO 9001 and its place in quality? From climate change integration to AI governance and industry-specific certifications, read on for practical insights that could impact your work.

  1. ISO Now Requires Management to Consider Climate Change in MSS

“If your organization is currently registered to any of the ISO Management System Standards (MSS), as of February 1st, 2024, you are now required to consider “climate change” within your management system.”

  2. Integrating Climate Change into ISO Standards

“ISO has been proactive…[but] the urgency of climate change demands a more concerted effort to integrate climate considerations into ISO standards.”

  3. ISO 9001:2015 Implementation: The Good, the Bad, and the Trending

“What ‘good’ have you seen in ISO 9001:2015 implementation?’ Risk [reduction] was, by far, the most mentioned topic.”

  4. Greenhouse Gases Related to ISO 9001 Amendment 1 Clause 4.2

“With a note added on climate change, the potential flood gates have now been opened to any number of new customer requirements.”

  5. Compliance in Manufacturing: A Practical Guide for Small Manufacturers

“Part of the difficulty in adhering to compliance regulations is being able to understand what auditors need and are looking for in quality systems.”

  6. Organizational Knowledge: So, Where Do We Begin?

“There is so much information and knowledge within an organization.”

  7. Integrating SHE Requirements into ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D Systems

“Here are practical steps to integrate Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) considerations into your existing ISO 9001 and AS9100 systems.”

  8. ISO Climate Change: The Ongoing Story

“One way to reframe this seemingly new push into climate change is to simply consider that your organization has been hunting for methods for years to improve operations.”

  9. Using the ISO Management Systems as a Marketing Tool

“Many organizations fail to realize the importance of customer perspectives on the use of standards.”

  10. An Effective Management System and Lean Enterprise Require a Cultural Change

“The biggest issue behind the failure of lean enterprise and management standards is that organizations use the methodology to reduce body count instead of taking work out.”

  11. The Essential Benefits of ISO Standards for Manufacturers

“ISO accreditation serves as a great marketing tool.”

  12. The Value of a Certified Quality Management System

    “What’s in a name — or a certification?”

  13. Learnings from ISO 9001:2015

“Having conducted well over 700 audits, I’ve noticed some patterns.”

  14. The Enduring Importance of Quality Standards

“Some benefits of quality standards are obvious, while others don’t get enough fanfare. The pandemic may have impacted how these standards are implemented.”

  15. Why ISO 9001 Still Matters

“There’s no one single right way to apply the standard – as long as there is conformance to requirements.”

  16. How to Lean Up Your ISO Documentation Structure

“If you want to simplify your ISO documentation, look no further.”

  17. My Unforgettable Quality Journey

“This accomplishment was genuinely unforgettable and ignited a profound passion to further develop my knowledge of quality.”

  18. Training Auditors to Integrate MSS Requirements

“There are a few things that could be useful in your internal training program.”
