Change Perspective

By Jim L. Smith

Since we are human, it is a safe assumption that at some point you have said to yourself, "Nothing ever goes right for me?"

In life not everything goes as planned or expected, even for the most successful people. But some people take failure very personally. It is our perspective that counts in the long run. Let’s explore this thought a bit further.

Do you think that nothing ever goes right for you? Do you believe that you are just an unlucky person? Maybe you have come to believe that most everyone enjoys seeing you fail.

You have come to believe that no matter what you do or how hard you work; you will probably fail. Well… this is true, but not for the reason you think. We have discussed personal beliefs for a while now. You have probably surmised that each one of us has a set of beliefs, and we act in accordance with those beliefs.

It is safe to presume that you have had a few setbacks that you were taught to interpret as failures. This is a safe bet because most of us are taught from an early age that not succeeding is the same as failure. Eventually, you develop a belief about yourself that says, "No matter what I do or how hard I work, I just can't succeed."

Ultimately, to make life match up with your belief, you begin to act in ways that reinforce your belief. You may even unconsciously sabotage things, so that you will fail. But you will be acting like you know yourself to be, which is what all of us do. You create what some refer to as a self-fulfilling prophecy, but we can alter that prophecy with changing your thought process.

If you want to change your life, you need to first change your belief system. Your first inclination might be changing your belief system is impossible, but it is indeed possible! Anything that was learned - and our beliefs are learned - can be unlearned and relearned. Then, you will continue to act like yourself, but you will see yourself differently, so your behavior will be different. And when you change your behavior, you change the results.

I am reminded of a reported quote by Gautama Buddha, the spiritual leader whose teaching served as foundations for Buddhism, “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.” In other words, change your perspective, and you change your life.

Think about it…
